Broos explains why he dropped Brandon Petersen from Bafana squad

Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos has explained why he snubbed Kaizer Chiefs captain Brandon Petersen from his 26-man squad for the FIFA World Cup

The 31-year-old keeper has had an outstanding season for Amakhosi and was tipped to make the squad to the tournament.

Having made the preliminary squad, Petersen was one of the six players to miss out of selection.

On Thursday, Broos explained why Petersen did not make the final Bafana squad.

“We only had two days of the camp, and we had top goalkeepers in camp. But I don’t know Brandon as a person, and I couldn’t decide on him on those two days. That’s why he was dropped, it was purely a matter of integration to the team. I don’t know, how he’ll react when he doesn’t start”, the Belgian coach said.

The five other players who missed out are Thabiso Monyane, Patrick Maswanganyi, Lebohang Maboe and Thapelo Morena.

Broos indicated that Morena was meant to be in the final squad but missed out due to an injury.

“We waited for the scans until 4pm yesterday and we had to make the call on Thapelo. He wasn’t gonna be able to train with the team for 2 weeks,” he said.

Many Kaizer Chiefs fans were not happy with Petersen’s omission in the Bafana squad, and took to social media to vent.

@ChosenDick247 wrote: “Sad, sad, sad. No Brandon Petersen. Hugo’s hate for Kaizer Chiefs runs deep.”

@Sibuzakes posted: “That coach has something against Kaizer Chiefs players. He hates them with passion.”

Who should have Petersen replaced?
