Broos Critical Of Maart & Sithole

Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has been critical of Yusuf Maart and Sphephelo ‘Yaya’ Sithole over their roles in Morocco’s second goal.

The Belgian tactician saw his side go 2-1 down at the Stade Prince Moulay in Rabat on Thursday evening.

After the match, Broos said he wasn’t too disappointed with his team’s performance even though he was left frustrated after they threw away their first-half lead.

However, the Bafana coach wasn’t at all impressed by the second goal conceded by his side, saying the ball was lost too cheaply by Yusuf Maart, who gave away possession when his team were a man down, starting the Morocco attack that lead to Ayoub El Kaabi’s winner.

“We were waiting till the ball was out [but] the ball was staying in and then we lose the ball in a very simple way [by Maart] and after that it was 2-1,” Broos told Bafana’s media team.

The 70-year-old, who won the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations with Cameroon, also questioned Sithole’s role after he was down injured a few times and off the pitch when Morocco scored.

“We asked him me the during the half-time, he said ‘Yeah, no problem, no problem’. So okay, no problem,” the coach continued.

“[But] you see then a certain moment there is a problem and then you cannot change immediately. And as you play with 10, you receive the goal.”

Bafana will now need to win their next two AFCON 2023 qualifiers against Liberia to secure qualification for next year’s tournament.
