Mathematician Aviwe Sofoyiya has developed a comprehensive mathematics manual to simplify the subject and help Grade 12 learners struggling with it.
The Grade 12 Mathematics Practice Manual Part 1 is aimed at helping learners achieve better results and qualify for courses at universities and colleges that require a pass in maths.
Sofoyiya says the manual simplifies the mathematics curriculum so that even the slowest learner can understand.
In an interview with Scrolla.Africa, Sofoyiya said that growing up with a love for numeracy, she envisioned building the first maths and science academy in Peddie, Eastern Cape.
“Growing up in disadvantaged communities and urban areas, I identified that although I loved maths and science, many learners struggled.
“This was mostly because of the poor foundation of the subjects in lower grades, which made it difficult for them to tackle them in higher grades.
“Over the years, I have also noticed that fewer and fewer learners are taking up the subjects as they deem them difficult,” she said.
The mathematician said that in 2022, while contracted by the IkamvaYouth and Shell Stem Programme in Peddie to monitor a tutoring programme, she realised the challenge was deeper than she had first thought.
“Due to the shortage of tutors, I was also forced to take over some classes. During this period, I was able to pick up some of the challenges.
“In my lessons, I introduced some of the easier techniques, and I started seeing the improvement in their performance.
“This was when I decided to start working on the manual. Two years later, I am proud that I have achieved this dream,” she said.
The book is meant to change the negative narrative that the subject is difficult, and to boost the learners’ grades.
Sofoyiya encourages Grade 12 learners who will sit for their preliminary exams next month to avoid panic.
