Pitso Mosimane set for return as Bafana Bafana coach after SAFA approval
The South African Football Association’s National Executive Committee has approved the appointment of Pitso Mosimane as the new head coach of Bafana Bafana, succeeding Hugo Broos.
SAFA held an extraordinary NEC meeting at SAFA House today? Saturday, 8 August 2026. Members backed Mosimane’s return to the senior men’s national team. President Dr Danny Jordaan said: “The NEC has approved the appointment of coach Pitso to Bafana Bafana, but we still need to tie up some loose ends. We will make a formal announcement of the coach next week.”
Broos, the Belgian who took charge in 2021, stepped down after his five-year contract expired at the end of July. Under him, Bafana qualified for the 2026 FIFA World Cup for the first time in 24 years, reached the knockout stage for the first time in their history (beating South Korea 1-0), and finished third at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
Mosimane, one of Africa’s most successful coaches with multiple league titles and three CAF Champions League triumphs (one with Mamelodi Sundowns and two with Al Ahly), previously led Bafana between 2010 and 2012. He had applied for the role after the World Cup and emerged as the frontrunner among more than 80 candidates.
The appointment comes as Bafana prepare for 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers starting in September. A formal unveiling is expected in the coming days once remaining formalities are completed.
