SAPS Suspends Nine Senior Officers Linked to Medicare24 Tender Scandal

The South African Police Service (SAPS) has suspended nine high-ranking officers who served on the Bid Evaluation Committee (BEC) for the controversial Medicare24 tender, citing ongoing disciplinary and related investigations.

In a statement issued today, SAPS confirmed the suspensions of:

· Major General Busisiwe Precious Temba
· Brigadier Rachel Matjeng
· Brigadier Alpheus Thembinkosi Ngema
· Brigadier Patrick Nethengwe
· Brigadier Kirsty Jonker
· Brigadier Onica Ofentse Tlhoale
· Colonel Nonjabulo Nomfundo Mngadi
· Colonel Natsenge Johannes Monyai
· Captain Brian Neville Catwright

The officers have been placed on suspension pending the finalisation of internal processes. “The SAPS remains committed to maintaining the highest standards of integrity, transparency and ethical conduct in all its operations,” the statement said, adding that no further comment would be made while matters are ongoing.

The suspensions form part of a widening probe into the 2024 awarding of a health and wellness services contract (tender L1815) to Medicare24 Tshwane District, a company owned by Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala. Valued at approximately R228 million against a R360 million budget, the contract was intended to provide medical surveillance and wellness services to SAPS members in the Tshwane District.
