Mofokeng seals Super Cup glory for Union SG with ice-cool winning penalty
South African star Relebohile Mofokeng marked his official debut for Union Saint-Gilloise in unforgettable fashion on Friday night, converting the decisive penalty as the Belgian side claimed the Super Cup with a 5-4 shootout victory over Club Brugge after a 1-1 draw.
The 21-year-old Bafana Bafana midfielder, who joined Union from Orlando Pirates in a record domestic transfer earlier last month, started on the bench at the Jan Breydelstadion. Introduced just after the hour mark with his new team trailing 1-0, Mofokeng helped steady the visitors.
Club Brugge had taken the lead early in the second half through Nicolo Tresoldi’s close-range volley. Argentine defender Kevin Mac Allister levelled for Union in the 77th minute, forcing the contest to penalties. All kicks were converted until Brugge teenager Cheveyo Tsawa saw his effort saved by Union goalkeeper Vic Chambaere. Mofokeng then stepped up and coolly slotted home into the top corner to secure the trophy.
It is Union’s second Super Cup triumph – both against Club Brugge and a perfect start to the 2026/27 campaign for the recent Belgian champions and cup winners. The victory also builds momentum ahead of their UEFA Champions League third qualifying round clash against Bodø/Glimt.
For Mofokeng, the PSL Footballer of the Year and World Cup performer with South Africa, it is an instant first trophy in Europe.
