Johannesburg High Court Orders Forfeiture of R326 Million in Assets Linked to Tembisa Hospital Corruption Scheme
The Asset Forfeiture Unit (AFU) of the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has secured a significant victory on Monday when the Johannesburg High Court issued a final forfeiture order for assets worth approximately R326 million belonging to corruption-accused businessman Hangwani Maumela and his associates.
The seized assets, tied to a syndicate accused of manipulating contracts at Tembisa Hospital in Gauteng, include a luxury R88.57 million mansion in Cape Town’s exclusive Bantry Bay, multiple properties in Sandton, high-end vehicles such as Lamborghinis and a Bentley, and a boat. Authorities allege these items were purchased with proceeds from over R400 million in fraudulent tenders between 2016 and 2022, diverting funds intended for hospital supplies and services.
The case gained prominence following the 2021 assassination of Babita Deokaran, the Gauteng health department’s chief accounting officer, who had exposed irregularities in the tenders. Her murder is widely believed to be linked to her whistleblowing on the alleged syndicate.
NPA officials described the forfeiture as a major step in dismantling corrupt networks and recovering public funds. The recovered assets will be directed back to Gauteng’s health services.
While the civil forfeiture represents a substantial win for law enforcement, questions remain about the pace of related criminal prosecutions against Maumela and others involved. Earlier preservation orders by the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) had targeted even larger sums linked to the syndicate.
This development underscores ongoing efforts to combat state capture and tender fraud in South Africa’s public health sector.
