Former ANC North West Treasurer Arrested for Failing to Appear Before Madlanga Commission, Allegedly Attempting to Flee Country
A 49-year-old businessman and former ANC North West regional treasurer has been arrested at OR Tambo International Airport in connection with proceedings before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry.
The man was arrested on Thursday evening, 15 October 2026, by members of the Commissions Recommendations Task Team (CRTT), shortly before he was due to board an international flight.
South African Police Service (SAPS) national spokesperson Athlenda Mathe confirmed the arrest, saying the suspect was expected to appear in the Pretoria Magistrates’ Court on Friday, 16 October.
According to police, the suspect was arrested for failing to appear before the commission. Authorities suspected that he was attempting to leave the country.
The businessman previously testified before the Madlanga Commission in March, where evidence leaders questioned him about millions of rands in transactions involving alleged crime boss Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala and businessman Hangwani Maumela.
Among the transactions examined was an investment of approximately R10 million in Tshwane Medicare24, a company awarded a R360 million South African Police Service health services contract.
The commission is investigating allegations of criminal infiltration, improper relationships and possible interference within the criminal justice system.
Further details regarding the circumstances surrounding the suspect’s failure to appear before the commission have not yet been disclosed.
