Disgraced Lawyer Peet Viljoen Arrested at OR Tambo on Return from US

Disgraced lawyer Peet Viljoen was arrested by the Hawks at OR Tambo International Airport on Tuesday evening upon his arrival in South Africa on a United Airlines flight from Newark, New Jersey.

The 57-year-old, who was deported from the US after spending about 100 days in detention linked to an alleged shoplifting scheme involving groceries with his wife Mel Viljoen, was immediately taken into custody on a warrant for fraud, theft, forgery, and corruption charges dating back to 2010. These relate to the alleged unlawful sale of Johannesburg Property Company (JPC) properties, where buyers reportedly paid but the funds never reached the company.

Viljoen, struck off the attorneys’ roll in 2011 and previously linked to the case, is expected to appear in the Pretoria Specialised Commercial Crimes Court on Thursday.
