AmaNdebele King Makhosonke II Mabhena Dies at 65

King Makhosonke II Mabhena of the amaNdebele akwaManala has died at the age of 65.

The revered traditional leader passed away today, Tuesday, 9 June 2026. King Makhosonke II ascended to the throne in 1986 and led the amaNdebele nation for four decades. He was recognised as the senior king of the amaNdebele nation following the findings of the Nhlapo Commission, a status later affirmed by court rulings.

Throughout his reign, King Makhosonke II was a strong advocate for the preservation of Ndebele culture and heritage. He also championed education and community development initiatives, helping to uplift communities under his leadership in KwaMhlanga.

Tributes have begun pouring in from political leaders, traditional authorities and community members across South Africa following news of his passing. The royal family is expected to announce details regarding memorial and funeral arrangements in due course.
