Lionel Messi has announced his new club, confirming on via an interview that he will join David Beckham’s Major League Soccer franchise Inter Miami.
Messi, 35, will leave Paris Saint-Germain upon the expiry of his contract later this month, as confirmed by the club on Saturday.
He had a lucrative offer to go to Al Hilal in Saudi Arabia but he rejected the chance to join Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema in Asia, while a return to FC Barcelona was made impossible due to LaLiga’s Financial Fair Play.
On Wednesday, Messi announced the decision to move to the MLS and join Inter Miami.
“I will not return to Barcelona, I will join Inter Miami” he said in an interview with Mundo Deportivo and SPORT.
“I made the decision to go to Miami. I still haven’t closed it 100% and there are some things missing, but well, we decided to continue the journey there.”
Meanwhile, Inter Miami president Jorge Mas posted a cryptic unveiling image of Messi in an Inter Miami shirt, just minutes before the interview.
