Stellenbosch FC have strengthened their attacking options with the signing of veteran striker Bradley Grobler, who reunites with head coach Gavin Hunt as he looks to add to his remarkable Premier Soccer League goalscoring record.
One of South African football’s most prolific forwards, the 38-year-old arrives in the Cape Winelands with 129 PSL goals, leaving him within touching distance of Peter Shalulile’s all-time league scoring record.
Grobler joins Stellenbosch after spells with Sekhukhune United and SuperSport United, where he enjoyed some of the most successful years of his career, including winning the 2020/21 PSL Golden Boot.
‘It feels amazing to be here’
The former Bafana Bafana striker said joining Stellenbosch was an easy decision after seeing the club’s ambition and professionalism firsthand.
“It feels amazing to be at Stellenbosch FC,” Grobler said.
“This is a club that I’ve always admired for the way it is run and the players it has produced over the years.
“It’s a club I probably should have considered joining a long time ago. Arriving here, meeting everyone, and getting an understanding of what the club is about have made it an easy decision.”
Grobler believes the squad has the quality to compete for honours this season.
“There’s a lot of potential here in Stellenbosch. When you look at the players that have signed and combine it with the youngsters coming through, it becomes a very exciting opportunity.”
Reunion with Gavin Hunt
The experienced striker will once again work under Gavin Hunt, with whom he enjoyed success during their time together at SuperSport United.
“It also certainly helps when you’ve worked with the coach before, and I’ve worked with Coach Gavin a few times in my career, and we’ve always worked well together,” Grobler said.
“But it’s not only him. The people around and involved in the Club have all made me feel like I’ve been here for years already.”
Chasing trophies
Approaching the twilight of his career, Grobler says his motivation remains unchanged.
“I’m someone who has always taken pride in what I do, and when a club shows interest in me the way Stellenbosch has, I want to make them proud and give the fans something to celebrate.
“This is a team that I believe can compete for trophies. For me personally, nearing the end of my career, I’d also love to win more silverware, and I believe we can do that together.
“The Club is ambitious, and the coach is ambitious, so I just want to come in and add as much value as I can.”
Another major signing
Grobler’s arrival continues an active transfer window for Stellenbosch, following the return of Ashley du Preez from Kaizer Chiefs and the signing of defender Given Msimango.
The veteran striker has been handed the No 67 jersey and could make his debut when Stellenbosch host Polokwane City in their next Betway Premiership clash on Tuesday, 11 August.
Kick-off is at 19:30.
