Deep in the trenches of Bavaria, a South African diamond is being polished meticulously.

Five years ago, Boipelo Mashigo was still battling amongst his peers in South Africa when he was in the SuperSport United academy, but fast forward to 2022 and the winger is harnessing his skills at one of the revered football institutions in Germany.

Mashigo began his career at Randburg Football Club before being scouted by SuperSport who roped him into their youth system before he got snapped up by the DFI Bad Aibling academy in 2016.

After just two seasons at the academy, the teenager was signed by Unterhaching in 2018 where he underwent vigorous development playing for their youth sides (Under-16, 17 and 19).

In the 2020/21 campaign, senior team head coach Sandro Wagner gave the youngster his debut and he went on to make eight German 3 Liga appearances for the first team.

Last season, the 19-year-old winger played 31 league games scoring three goals and assisting another four strikes as Unterhaching finished in the top five in the German Bayern Regionalliga standings.

On the international stage, Mashigo has never represented South Africa at any level, but his continued rise in Germany may see him getting recognition in his native country.
