Bodies of missing municipal officials recovered in uMdloti River

The employees were returning home from a funeral in Harrismith when they were swept off a bridge by the weekend’s heavy rains

Their vehicle was spotted floating in the Umdloti River in Ogunjini, north of Durban, on Monday.

Divers went into the water but found no one inside the vehicle.

At some point, the search operation had to be halted due to a strong water current.

eThekwini Municipality’s Msawakhe Mayisela says rescue teams found the bodies quite some distance from where the car was retrieved.

“Our mayor has sent his heartfelt condolences to the families. He has also sent his deepest condolences to a family of one of our employees who was gunned down in Folweni earlier in the week.

“He has vowed that our city will continue to be behind all the families who are currently in bereavement.”
