  • A rare Blood Moon will be visible across South Africa tonight during a total lunar eclipse.
  • The eclipse will peak at 8:11 p.m. and no special equipment is needed to view it.
  • It’s expected to be the longest and most vividly red lunar eclipse since 2022.

South Africans are in for a treat tonight as a Blood Moon is set to grace the skies during a rare total lunar eclipse.

The phenomenon, which occurs when the Earth moves directly between the Sun and the Moon, casting a reddish shadow over the Moon’s surface, will be visible across much of the world, including all parts of South Africa.

According to astronomers, the eclipse will be visible from 7:30 p.m. to 8:52 p.m., with the peak of the Blood Moon occurring at approximately 8:11 p.m.

This will be the longest total lunar eclipse visible since 2022, and experts say tonight’s moon will appear deeper and richer in red than usual.

Experts said no special glasses or filters are needed to safely enjoy the view. Whether you’re in Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban, or even a quiet dorp in the middle of nowhere, you’ll have a clear front-row seat to one of nature’s most awe-inspiring shows.

So, whether you’re a stargazer, a hopeless romantic, or just someone looking for a good reason to step outside tonight September 7 is your night to look up.
