Blom’s agent Rob Moore’s advice to Kaizer Chiefs

Njabulo Blom’s agent Rob Moore has given some advice to his client’s former club, Kaizer Chiefs, writes Joshua Hendricks.

Moore orchestrated Blom’s move from his boyhood club to MLS outfit St Louis City. The revered agent has shared his thoughts on what the club should do to catch up with archrival Mamelodi Sundowns.

The recently-crowned DStv Premiership champions wrapped up the title with seven games to spare. It was their sixth successive title, underlining their dominance in local football.

MOORE’S ADVICE TO KAIZER CHIEFS

On the other hand, Chiefs are approaching a decade without significant silverware in their trophy cabinet.

“They’ve got to do what Mamelodi Sundowns have done – quality ownership, ownership who has resources to be in the game,” Moore told the YouTube channel This Is Football Africa.

Moore believes the South African game is “filled with too many clubs with ownership that shouldn’t be in the game”. He is convinced some club owners “don’t really have the resources”.

“We have moved backwards in terms of players not getting paid, getting paid late, all these kinds of hard luck stories,” explained Moore.

He listed three things that could help teams catch up with Sundowns. “Better quality ownership, Sundowns have got quality ownership.

“Number two, ownership that understands the game and employs the right people. Tlhopie Motsepe runs his club, and he runs it very well.

COPYING THE SUNDOWNS MODEL

“He has got Fleming Berg, a highly experienced sporting director running the footballing side of his club, which then, in turn, means a good quality coach that’s in place, good quality recruitment, and a good structure.

“Then number three, being progressive off the field. Sundowns have been progressive off the field and try to be innovative. So it’s that simple. You just have to copy that.”

The super-agent manages high-profile clients like Benni McCarthy and Steven Pienaar, and now he also has the USA international Christian Pulisic, who is currently at Chelsea FC.

“The problem is that on those three pillars, too many clubs fail on two of the three points,” added Moore.

“Maybe the quality of ownership is not good enough, or they don’t have the resources. Or they’ve got the resources, but they don’t have the right people in place that are meant to be running the show.

“Or they have got the money, with the right people, but they aren’t innovative enough, or they don’t capitalise on the off-the-field stuff in order to create a bigger club. So really, they just need to copy Sundowns.”

Moore was one of the pioneers that founded Ajax Cape Town and produced some of the most extraordinary talents to play in the PSL and abroad.
