DJ Black Coffee, aka Nkosinathi Innocent Maphumulo, is a self-proclaimed petrol head of the highest order. If there’s a high-performance supercar out there, he’s probably owned it.

However, it is the Grammy-award-winning DJ’s fight over a R7.7 million Maserati open-top supercar that is making headlines this week.
It’s been widely reported that Casa Vehicle Holdings, trading as Maserati SA, faces a writ of execution issued on 17 August 2026.
As such, this directs the sheriff to attach and auction the company’s movable goods to recover monies owed to Black Coffee.
BLACK COFFEE’S SUPERCARS
According to reports, the dispute has its roots back in 2022. Black Coffee purchased a Maserati MC20 Coupe for around R7 million.
Two years later, he agreed to trade that car in toward a custom-spec, open-top version, the MC20 Cielo, priced R2 million dearer at roughly R9 million. You must remember that Maserati is a boutique car manufacturer from Italy.
Everything is strictly made to order. And while roughly 1 200 MC20s are built annually, the more exclusive Cielo and MCPura models (pictured below) are built in such few numbers that the brand doesn’t even disclose how many (likely only a few hundred annually).
Nevertheless, delivery of the DJ’s supercar was promised in July 2025. However, a month before, the dealership delivered the bad news that his car had not even started being built, and no firm delivery date could be given.
WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?
Black Coffee wanted out of the deal. But before entering into litigation, he did try to settle the matter directly.
Correspondence from Maserati SA allegedly shows the factory had made a ‘special exception’ to move him up in the queue.
It cited the DJ’s global profile.
However, because the company failed to mount a substantive defence, judge Sanet van Aswegen granted summary judgment in favour of Soulistic Music, the DJ’s company.
Maserati must repay the R7 million, plus interest at 10.5% a year from August 2025 until settled, plus legal costs.
At last count, this adds up to R7.7 million. It’s unclear whether Maserati SA intends to appeal the judgement.
