Grammy-winning DJ and producer Black Coffee is once again making headlines for giving back, this time through a back-to-school drive in Soweto.

Born Nkosinathi Maphumulo, the international music star visited Thabisang Primary School in Orlando West, Johannesburg, on Friday, where his foundation handed out full school uniforms and shoes to learners in need.

The initiative marked the official launch of the Black Coffee Foundation’s 2026 Back to School campaign, in partnership with Gautrain.

In a statement, the foundation said the goal was not only to clothe learners but to empower them as they begin the academic year.

“We supported learners with full school uniforms and school shoes; helping them step into the academic year with confidence and pride. This initiative is about more than clothing. It’s about restoring dignity, strengthening community and investing in the future, one learner at a time,” the foundation said.

It added that learners at Thabisang Primary School “didn’t just get uniforms and shoes, they walked into the year with pride and purpose.”

Beyond uniforms, the foundation also introduced a new programme called Gift of Sight, aimed at addressing vision challenges among pupils.

The initiative focuses on early detection and intervention to ensure eyesight problems do not hinder academic performance.

“This initiative focuses on early detection and intervention, ensuring that learners with vision challenges are identified and supported before it affects their long-term academic journey. Education should never be limited by something as preventable as poor eyesight,” the foundation said.

“We’re proud to be implementing this programme directly where it makes the biggest difference, in schools, within communities.”
