Bimenyimana Bags Brace In Comeback Chiefs Win

New Kaizer Chiefs striker Bonfils-Caleb Bimenyimana scored a brace on his first start for the club to secure a 2-1 comeback win over SuperSport United at FNB Stadium on Saturday evening.

The Burundi international, along with Mozambique defender Dove Edmilson were both awarded their full debuts for the club by Arthur Zwane but in the early stages, nerves seem to get the better of them along with some of their teammates.

SuperSport, led by their former coach Gavin Hunt, profited from their indecision and lack of control of possession with several threatening counter-attacks and it eventually yielded the opener when Grant Margeman smashed a stunning left-footed shot past Itumeleng Khune 15 minutes into the game.

The fans in attendance at FNB were left bewildered which rubbed off onto the players immediately as they looked devoid of confidence, but a couple of attacks from the livewire new Bafana Bafana winger Kgoelo Sekgota sparked new life into the crowd and their attacking threat.

Five minutes before the break after creating a few half chances, a neat build-up play which saw Edmilson, Yusuf Maart, and Ashley Du Preez all link up, resulted in a cut-back for Bimenyimana to slot in his first-ever goal for the club which changed the mood and momentum for the second half.

Chiefs looked buoyed by their strong end to the half and were awarded a penalty ten minutes after the break as Maart, who was fielded in an eight role rather than six, where Njabulo Blom was now deployed was played in through on goal – but Keagan Johannes hauled the midfielder down inside the area.

The confident Bimenyimana, who was ironically spotted by Chiefs when he scored at the same venue for his country against Namibia in their recent Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, stepped up to secure the comeback, much to the delight and jubilation of the Amakhosi faithful.

A hard-earned and much-needed three points for Chiefs moved them into ninth place, while SuperSport saw their four-game unbeaten run ended as they dropped to seventh place in the league.
