Bheki Cele says police can’t do anything about parents selling children online

Police Minister Bheki Cele says as much as police are aware that parents are selling children online, there’s nothing SAPS can do about it.

According to Cele there’s simply no resources for SAPS to monitor these social media platforms and stop human trafficking.

In response to a written parliamentary question earlier this month, Cele shared that parents are selling their children on Facebook Marketplace.

“SAPS has identified specific media platforms that are being used as the platform for human trafficking. These platforms are hosted on the Clearweb, namely Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and WhatsApp. These social media platforms mentioned are managed in the United States of America.”

While the police are aware that this is an ongoing cyber crime, Cele says there are no resources to clamp down and put more measures in place to stop the smuggling of children.

The question on the trafficking of children was raised by IFP MP, Zandile Majozi, who wanted to know how police are stopping the heinous crime of child trafficking.

Cele said that SAPS does not collaborate with any external agencies to monitor online platforms.

This after 7 Gauteng suburbs ranked high as human trafficking hotspots in the country.

Springs, Benoni, Fordsburg, Krugersdorp, Sunnyside, Vereeniging and Vanderbijlpark has been ranked as human trafficking hotspots.

The information was released in an anti-trafficking campaign on Freedom Day by NGOs, A21, The National Freedom Network and Think Creative Africa.
