Bheki Cele admits police are failing to do their job

Police Minister ,Bheki Cele, admitted that the police were failing to deal with dangerous crimes in Jabulani and the surrounding areas, but he urged municipalities to build adequate infrastructure to assist with policing.

While admitting that police were failing to combat crime, he stated that officers required assistance. He said this during the Imbizo in response to the recurring murders and robberies that led to the meeting with the minister at the hostel Izinduna last week Friday.

Cele said the Jabulani police station has recorded more crimes, but  there have been few arrests.

“There are 73 people who were killed but only 24 arrested it is important we find them until the numbers equals those killed,” he said.

He said 89 people were raped “but those arrested are 35, there shouldn’t be anyone raped but the perpetrator is not apprehended.”

For the sake of the community, he urged cooperation between police and residents.

“These people doing these horrific things.. they sleep in your houses ..are fed by you, so we need to work together.”

Community member ,Steven Mphela, said the police needed to do more.

“The cases get opened but people with political influence don’t get arrested that’s why there is a lot of crime activities.”

Another member of the community who wished to remain anonymous complained about tavern’s loud night time music causing a disturbance in his neighbourhood.

“We are asking for police to do their jobs, we don’t mind when tavern owners sell liquor but they should respect us,” he said.

Nompumelelo Radebe, the mother of two teenagers who were killed by the mob, said she hasn’t received any justice.

“Nine people were involved in the killing of my second child but only two were arrested so I haven’t found justice it’s so painful because he was beaten for stealing but I have pointed the rest who were involved but police told me I’ll ruin the case. I hope Cele will solve it,” she said.
