South Africa’s top football league, the PSL, has signed a major sponsorship deal with online betting company Betway.
This three-year agreement will rename the league as the Betway Premiership.
“This is the single biggest investment in South African sport,” said Betway CEO Laurence Michel.
“It is a three-year sponsorship, worth around R900-million,” confirmed PSL chairman Dr Irvin Khoza.
This deal comes after Multichoice ended its sponsorship due to a financial loss of R4.1-billion.
Dr Khoza said that there would be no penalties for Multichoice and that the DStv Diski Challenge would continue.
The new season will start on 3 August as planned.
Information about the prize money and new trophy design will be shared soon.
Betting companies are major sponsors in football. In England, 11 Premier League teams will have betting logos on their shirts next season, though this will be banned from 2026.
In South Africa, Hollywood Bets sponsors the women’s league, and teams like Kaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pirates, and Golden Arrows have betting company sponsors.
