The Betway Premiership will take a two-week recess as South African football turns its attention to cup, continental and international commitments.
The league has completed the latest round of fixtures, with clubs now preparing for a demanding period that will see several of the country’s top sides competing on different fronts.
The break comes as the football calendar makes room for CAF club competitions, FIFA competition commitments and the national-team programme.
The pause is part of the 2026/27 Premier Soccer League calendar, which includes a two-and-a-half-week FIFA international window from September 21 to October 6.
Mamelodi Sundowns are among the clubs whose attention has shifted away from domestic league football.
The reigning CAF Champions League champions recently represented Africa in the FIFA Intercontinental Cup and defeated Saudi Arabian giants Al Ahli 2-1 at Loftus Versfeld on September 19.
Nuno Santos scored both goals for the Brazilians, securing their passage to the next stage of the global competition.
Sundowns will now face the winner of the FIFA Derby of the Americas, involving Mexican side Toluca and the eventual 2026 Copa Libertadores champions, for a place in the Challenger Cup.
The Brazilians had entered the FIFA competition after winning the 2025/26 CAF Champions League, their second continental crown.
The CAF inter-club competitions will also demand the attention of South Africa’s representatives.
The 2026/27 CAF Champions League and CAF Confederation Cup campaigns form part of a busy schedule for the country’s leading clubs, with the continental programme running alongside domestic football. CAF has already confirmed the key dates for the new campaign.
Orlando Pirates, Kaizer Chiefs, Mamelodi Sundowns and Durban City are among the South African clubs involved in continental competition this season.
Pirates’ involvement in CAF football has already affected their domestic programme, with the Buccaneers missing a Betway Premiership fixture during the previous round because of their continental commitments.
League race on hold
The temporary suspension also means that the early Betway Premiership title race will have to wait before the leading clubs can resume their battle for points.
Sundowns had been among the busiest teams in the opening weeks of the campaign, playing a series of league matches before their FIFA assignment. According to the club’s official fixture list, their most recent league match was a 1-1 draw against Chippa United on September 12, before they switched their attention to the FIFA Intercontinental Cup.
Their next scheduled Betway Premiership fixture is away against Richards Bay on October 17.
The break therefore provides clubs with an opportunity to rest players, work on tactical preparations and manage squads ahead of what promises to be another congested period of the season.
The Betway Premiership is scheduled to resume after the international window, with domestic action set to regain centre stage as clubs continue their pursuit of the league title, continental qualification and survival.
With CAF and FIFA commitments now dominating the calendar, South African football supporters will have to wait a little longer before the battle for Betway Premiership points resumes.
