An Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) raid at a school in Belvedere, Benoni, has led to the discovery and confiscation of numerous illegal items, including knives, drugs, and a significant number of vapes.

The operation took place on Tuesday, 9 September 2025, as part of an ongoing effort to ensure student safety.

The EMPD’s K9 Unit, along with a sniffer dog, conducted searches of both students and their school bags in classrooms. The operation’s goal was to find dangerous weapons and illegal substances that pose a risk to learners and staff.

The search yielded a substantial haul: 10 knives, 3 knuckle dusters, and 3 toy guns. The K9 unit also located 7 bags of cannabis, along with 5 matchboxes and 9 lighters. Most notably, officers seized a staggering 221 vapes.

All confiscated items were immediately removed from the premises.

The EMPD confirmed that similar operations will be carried out across the City of Ekurhuleni to maintain secure learning environments. The department stressed its commitment to eliminating weapons, drugs, and other harmful items from schools to ensure the well-being of all learners.
