Benni: The Challenge Is Too Big For AmaZulu

AmaZulu head coach Benni McCarthy did not mince his words after they laboured to an unwanted league record of 14 draws on Wednesday evening.

McCarthy’s side drew 2-2 after goals from Matarr Ceesay and Thembela Sikhakhane, which saw them remain in sixth place while Stelllenbosch scored through Ashley Du Preez and Juan ‘Lete’ Ortiz.

With Usuthu juggling CAF Champions League football and domestic action – something that proved the Achilles heel of Kaizer Chiefs last season, McCarthy admits it’s something his squad simply can’t cope with.

“Considering how it [was] planned out I think when you get a draw if you played the way you played you take it,” McCarthy told SuperSport TV.

“It’s clear now that the challenge is too big for a team like us. Just to play the CAF Champions League and then to come back to the domestic league the two just don’t go together. We don’t seem to manage that.

“Yes, we didn’t lose but it feels like every draw these days feels like a loss because where we would’ve been in the league now if we would’ve won the games we have drawn, but anyway the players gave the effort.”

McCarthy once again spoke about the cruel scheduling of the league, with AmaZulu having to juggle CAF Champions League football and DStv Premiership games every three days over the past two weeks.

“When you’ve rested for 10 days and the other team has played CAF Champions League and then three days later you asked to go again, against a team who’s well-rested and who’s fairly fitter, they run a lot of cause we have to compete, we have to keep up,” he added.

“But I think the odds were kinder, more tips into their favour. So when you get a draw you take it but disappointing.

“Disappointing for me that these are the games you expect your team to compete and you go for it and we didn’t show enough of that and that’s why the opposition gets a point and they leave the happier than what you are. It is what it is.”

AmaZulu FC will then travel to Pretoria to face Supersport United at 17h30.
