Former AmaZulu coach Benni McCarthy has revealed who he thinks are the two biggest wasted talents in South African football.
McCarthy, 44, is currently without a job after leaving AmaZulu ‘by mutual consent’ earlier this year.
The reigning DStv Premiership Coach of the Season had taken somewhat of a sabbatical from social platforms and media but has slowly returned to share his knowledge.
On Wednesday he joined a debate about the biggest wasted talent in South African football history, which was started by SuperSport’s Thomas Mlambo.
McCarthy named Anthony Christen, also known as ‘Money Eyes’, as the “biggest waste of talent”, saying he was as skilful as FC Barcelona and Brazil legend Ronaldinho.
“I’ve played with both Money Eyes and Junaid Hartley, two naturally gifted players wit incredible skills but Money Eyes was Ronaldinho level. For me the biggest waste of talent ever,” he stated.
While Christen is a player unknown to the wider football fraternity and must’ve played with McCarthy at youth level, Hartley played for Orlando Pirates, Moroka Swallows, Ajax Cape Town and Maritzburg United, among other, and also made five appearances for Bafana Bafana.
McCarthy himself made more out of his talent, becoming the only South African footballer to lift the UEFA Champions League title with Jose Mourinho’s Porto in 2003/04.
He is also Bafana’s all-time record goalscorer with 31 goals in 80 appearances.
