AmaZulu head coach Benni McCarthy believes Mamelodi Sundowns will beat their former coach Pitso Mosimane and African champions Al Ahly.
It will be the third time Mosimane meets Masandawana since his shock exit in September 2020, with one win and a draw from the two previous results.
Both sides now have a chance to move to the summit of Group A, which has been dubbed by many as this season’s Group of Death in Africa’s elite club competition.
With Al-Merrikh taking all three points in the Nile Derby on Friday, they lead the group as things stand and McCarthy feels Sundowns will shock them in their own backyard this evening.
“If I was a betting man, as much as I have a good relationship, love and respect for coach Pitso my loyalty is with Sundowns not with Al Ahly,” he told reporters this week.
“I want them to do well because they represent South Africa as we do with Pirates, we have to be supportive. So as much as one of your favourite people that’s coaching but when it comes up against your countryman.
“I will always vouch for my country and I know Sundowns have what it takes to beat Ahly. They have a massive opportunity, I can point it out that Sundowns will win, I’m sorry coach Pitso.”
The 2016 champions and the record ten-time Champions will meet at the Cairo International Stadium this evening (21h00).
