BEEFY: Villagers Celebrate Second Hippo Feast as Troublesome Animal Meets Its End

Residents of Mavambe in Malamulele, Limpopo, have once again had a unique dining experience by eating hippo meat.

Three months after the first time they ate hippo meat, the people in the village were able to catch and kill another hippo that was causing trouble in the village.

The hippo was finally brought down after the villagers worked together and got help from the Limpopo Department of Economic Development, Environment, and Tourism (LEDET). At first, though, it was hard to get the animal back.

Nonetheless, the following day brought joy as the floating hippo was discovered in Jim John Dam.

Eager to make the most of the situation, community members wasted no time in turning the intimidating creature into a delicious meal.

The hippo meat was shared among the villagers, with some opting to prepare hearty hippo stew and others even transforming the meat into biltong, preserving it for later enjoyment.

Nhlamulo Mabasa, a resident, expressed the community’s relief and satisfaction, stating that the hippo’s presence had been a constant source of fear and disruption.

The animal’s destructive behavior had not only caused damage to crops but also affected daily life, including school attendance.

Village chief Xirele Manganyi echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the hardships the troublesome hippo had imposed on the community.

With the animal finally taken care of, he expressed gratitude for the restoration of peace and the resolution of ongoing complaints.

LEDET spokesperson Zaid Kalla advised residents on how to handle encounters with dangerous animals.

He stressed the importance of avoiding direct contact with the animals and promptly alerting authorities such as the South African Police Service (SAPS) or LEDET.

Additionally, Kalla emphasized the need to inform fellow residents of potential dangers and to take necessary precautions, especially when it comes to the safety of children and toddlers. – Daily Sun
