Bayern Munich coach Julian Nagelsmann has given an update on Sadio Mane after the Senegal superstar missed the 2022 FIFA World Cup due to injury.

Mane picked up an injury in Bayern’s penultimate Bundesliga game before the World Cup break against Werder Bremen and needed to undergo surgery to refix a tendon in the head of his right fibula..

There was an initial hope from Senegal that he would recover in time for the World Cup and coach Aliou Cisse had even included him ins his World Cup squad, but he was later ruled out of the tournament.

However, he is now stepping up his recovery, as confirmed by his club. “The 30-year-old Senegal international is currently training at the German record champions’ performance centre at Säbener Straße to prepare for his return to the pitch. Today, Tuesday, Mané was able to complete his first running session with reduced body weight on the AlterG,” Bayern said via a statement.

On Thursday, Nagelsmann revealed that Mane could be back for Bayern’s UEFA Champions League round of 16 clash with Paris Saint-Germain on 14 February.

“He’s an important player. If everything goes well, then it could be the case that he returns in time for PSG,” he said.

“We will see how he reacts to the workload. Personally, I’m not yet considering him for the first leg.”

The first leg in Paris will take place on 14 February, while the second leg will be played in Munich on 8 March.
