Baxter Not Happy Despite Soweto Derby Win

Kaizer Chiefs coach Stuart Baxter has revealed why he was not happy with his side after their 2-1 win in the Soweto Derby.

The Glamour Boys collected all three points after Reeve Frosler and Eric Mathoho secured the bragging rights.

Baxter, who had to make several forced changes due to injury, says he was happy with the result but not happy with how his team saw out the win.

“I though the first half was well played tactically,” he said after the match.

“I thought we controlled the game, even though we weren’t doing 100% what we wanted to be doing but there was another team called Orlando Pirates on the field. It’s not easy.

“I thought we looked very good offensively, but Khama going off was a blow to us. We planned to have Lebo as a false 9, drop a bit deeper and get our quick players in Keagan and Khama come inside, challenging their centre-backs. Khama going off shuffled it up a little bit.

“Second half was a different game, Pirates got back into it. I thought in the first half we had a goal when Keagan scored, I haven’t seen it again, but good run, it’s something that we’ve been working on.

“Then Pirates get back in, we make a mistake and they throw the kitchen sink at us. We got a couple of injuries, we keep changing.

“It became a battle to preserve what we’ve got, but we showed great discipline on our corner that we’ve worked on just for this game. That was great, that that one went in.

“But then the last 10 minutes, I wasn’t happy. I wasn’t happy with the way we were playing. The decisions that we took on the ball to allow them to deliver more balls into the box – one could’ve bounced of the post and gone and one bounced of the post and got out.

“We were living on the knife-edge. So [I’m] delighted to win the derby, delighted for the management and supporters but we have to be better than that, we have to manage games better.”
