Baxter Confirms Chiefs No.1 Amid Petersen, Khune Form

Stuart Baxter has explained that Brandon Petersen has won the form battle for the starting berth in the Kaizer Chiefs goal – at least for now.

The Englishman will oversee his third derby of the campaign, after the Carling Black Label Cup, where Itumeleng Khune started before being replaced by Petersen, and the reverse league fixture, which saw Daniel Akpeyi get the nod.

In the last two games, Baxter has started Petersen, despite Khune showing convincing performances in the DStv Compact Cup.

The Amakhosi coach confirmed on Thursday when asked by iDiski Times that Petersen will continue between the sticks but the competition for the spot is high.

“The goalkeeper situation has not changed. The goalkeeper situation is that we’re very lucky that we have four goalkeepers who are competing very hard,” he said on Friday.

“We have a younger variety to a more experienced variety and the two in the more experienced variety keep pushing every day.

“At the moment, Brandon has got a hold of the [Nr.1] shirt. He’s had a couple of shutouts and he’s looking secure at the moment.

“But he knows he’s under so much pressure from the others that that gives us a healthy competition.”

Pirates welcome Chiefs at the Orlando Stadium on Saturday, with Amakhosi entering the game on the back of two games without conceding.
