Stellenbosch FC head coach Steve Barker hopes that Sibongiseni Mthethwa gets more chances at Bafana Bafana.
Mthethwa received his first ever Bafana Bafana call-up a few weeks ago and made his debut against Botswana.
The ‘Ox’ as he’s affectionally known played 83 minutes before he was substituted by Sphephelo Sithole.
The 28-year-old has been instrumental for Stellies in the middle of the park and Barker hopes Mthethwa will get more chances with Bafana, as he feels he can help the nation.
“Obviously it’s never easy when it’s your first call-up,” Barker told local journalists.

“He’s had a big step from NFD to PSL, now to Bafana but I thought he put himself very well. I think he’s the type of player [who can do well] playing in Africa.
“He’s robust, he’s strong, he never gives up. I think he can be a really good asset for Bafana, maybe not starting every game but if you have somebody to show up and help the midfield, I think he will be more than capable. So I’m very proud of what he’s done.
“He’s got a lot of growth and learning to do. So we got to keep doing that and providing him that opportunity and hopefully, the coach can continue to give him those chances.”
Barker himself had reason to celebrate earlier this week after Stellenbosch extended his own contract until 2026 to reward the fine work he’s put in at the Winelands outfit.
