Stellenbosch FC head Steve Barker opened up on former player Leletu Skelem who has been without a club since leaving Maritzburg United.
Skelem was with the Cape Winelands side when they gained promotion to the DStv Premiership back in 2018/19 season.
The 24-year-old joined Maritzburg United in August 2021 and the move saw Judas Mosiamedi moving in the opposite direction.
Skelem made 28 appearances in all competitions for the Team of Choice and scored two goals. He then parted ways with the KwaZulu Natal side in December 2022. Barker made it clear that they won’t close the door for him.
“We did speak to him. So he’s training with Maties now. So basically, we’ve had a chat, he needs to get back to some form of playing even if he has to go a step lower and just get match fit and match sharp,” Barker said after the 1-1 draw against Mamelodi Sundowns.
“We can always look at how can we help him. But also he needs to help himself. There’s an open invitation for him to come to speak to us that we will give him a program to follow conditioning program.
“And then once he shows that the commitment is there to get his conditioning. We won’t close the door on him. But a lot of the onus is also on him.”
Stellies have already brought another forward back to the club in the form of Iqraam Rayners who’s netted six goals in four games since his return from SuperSport United.
