Barberton Mines was the world’s first gold mine and the place where gold was first discovered in South Africa. Along with the Fairview, Consort, and Sheba Mines, the Barberton Mine has operated for over 100 years. The mines produce approximately two tons of gold per year and have a stellar safety record.
The mine is located near a small town in the Mpumalanga province, 40 kilometers from Mbombela, and 360 kilometers from Johannesburg. In 1884, Barberton started to develop as a mining town due to the discovery of gold. The gold rush helped the town to develop faster due to the discovery of gold. It was then, in 1887, that Barberton became the new center of mining development due to the creation of the first stock exchange in the then Transvaal. Barberton mining, however, slowed and scaled back after gold was found in Witwatersrand.
As of June 2020, Barberton’s large mines are the only ones operating while their team is celebrating their 3rd Millionth shift without a fatality. Still, the Barberton mine remains one of the world’s oldest and most productive mines.
