Banyana Banyana have kept their hopes of qualifying for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup alive after securing a hard-fought 2-1 victory over arch-rivals Nigeria in Casablanca on Thursday night.
The South African senior women’s national team produced a determined performance at the Moulay Rachid Stadium to book their place in the next phase of the World Cup qualification process.
The victory was secured through goals from star forward Thembi Kgatlana and captain Refiloe Jane, with goalkeeper Kaylin Swart playing a crucial role as Banyana held on to claim a memorable win.
Both South Africa and Nigeria had been eliminated in the quarter-finals of the 2026 CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), missing out on the four automatic African qualification places for the World Cup.
That meant the two African giants had to fight for another route to the global showpiece, with South Africa now moving into the FIFA World Cup Play-Off Tournament scheduled for November 2026.
Banyana broke the deadlock in the 56th minute when Kgatlana finished off a well-worked move after receiving a superb pass from Hilda Magaia.
The goal gave Desiree Ellis’ charges renewed confidence, and they continued to put pressure on the Super Falcons.
Jane then doubled South Africa’s advantage in the 77th minute when the captain unleashed a powerful effort from the edge of the penalty area that found the back of the net.
Nigeria refused to surrender and were handed a lifeline during stoppage time when Jane was sent off for handling the ball inside the penalty area.
Christy Ucheibe converted the resulting penalty to reduce the deficit to 2-1.
The Super Falcons pushed desperately for an equaliser in the closing stages, but Swart stood firm between the posts.
The goalkeeper produced a series of important saves to keep Nigeria at bay and was subsequently named Woman of the Match for her outstanding performance.
Her contribution proved decisive as Banyana held on for the final whistle, with the South African players celebrating by lifting their goalkeeper onto their shoulders.
The victory means Banyana Banyana remain in contention for a place at the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.
The next phase of the qualification process is scheduled for November and will bring together teams from Africa, Asia, Oceania and South America in the final battle for World Cup places.
Banyana Banyana will return to South Africa this weekend, with their attention now turning to the crucial play-off tournament that could determine whether they reach the global showpiece next year.
