The IFP in KwaZulu-Natal says companies involved in corruption should not be allowed to bid for government tenders.
IFP member Blessed Gwala made this proposal while praising Public Works and Infrastructure MEC Martin Meyer of the DA for taking a strong stand against construction mafia groups in the province.
Gwala said many companies mentioned in corruption investigations should no longer be allowed to do business with the government and municipalities.
The KZN government has been criticised in the past for not taking strong enough action against corrupt companies.
“While we appreciate the MEC’s work in fighting corruption and dealing with construction mafias, the provincial government needs to be tougher. Companies facing corruption charges should not be allowed to get government contracts,” Gwala said.
Some companies linked to corruption reports work in catering, construction, and event organising. Many were found guilty under former premier Willies Mchunu.
Recently, Meyer announced that the department plans to make the tender process more open by conducting recorded audio and video interviews to prevent corruption.
Businesspeople in KZN have complained for years that tenders are often given to the same people, while some companies have been on the government’s database for over 10 years and have yet to get any projects.
