Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos Fagrie will get a chance to ‘prove himself’ against Guinea and France in the upcoming FIFA international break.

South Africa are scheduled to face the West Africans and the reigning FIFA World Cup champions in Europe this month as preparation for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

Lakay, who recently moved to Pyramids, is one of only four players based abroad, alongside Lyle Foster (Westerlo/Belgium), Bongokuhle Hlongwane (Minnesota United/USA) and Percy Tau (Al Ahly/Egypt).

The 24-year-old joined the Egyptian Premier League outfit in a deal worth R15m and has featured in all seven games since his move, starting in six and scoring twice.

“For me, it wasn’t easy when I came to South Africa because I didn’t know South African football or the players, I had to see games to look at the players, so I started something in September,” Broos said on Radio 2000 in conversation with Andile Ncube.

“Every selection I made there was some other players because I wanted to improve [the squad] and when you talk about Lakay, he’s one of those players in September I didn’t know him and by following the games you get to know them better.

“In that last game against Zimbabwe and Ghana he was already a few minutes on the pitch and when you see how he’s developing in Egypt, so okay I think this guy needs his chance to prove himself in Bafana Bafana.”

The Santos academy graduate is the youngest ever debutant for Bafana when he made his bow under Shakes Mashaba as a 16-year-old in 2014.
