South Africa secured first place in Group B with a hard-fought 3-2 victory over Zimbabwe, ending the opening stage with a perfect six-point record.

In a breathless finale, Tshepang Moremi’s deflected opener was cancelled out by a brilliant solo effort from Tawanda Maswanhise.

Lyle Foster restored Bafana Bafana’s lead with a powerful header, only for a South African own goal to level the scores once more.

The match was ultimately decided by Oswin Appollis, who converted a VAR-awarded penalty to seal the win and earn Man of the Match honours.

While South Africa dominated possession, their defensive lapses remain a concern ahead of the knockout rounds. Nevertheless, the victory has sparked nationwide celebrations and calls for the country to unite behind the squad.
