Bad news for Pirates: Five Chiefs stars risk missing crucial Sundowns showdown

Kaizer Chiefs could be forced into a major reshuffle when they face Mamelodi Sundowns next week, with as many as six key players at risk of missing the clash due to suspension.

Fresh off a spirited 1-1 draw against arch-rivals Orlando Pirates at the FNB Stadium, Amakhosi showed resilience and character much to the delight of their supporters.

The result was a significant response after their heavy 3-0 defeat in the first-round derby, and it also dealt a blow to Pirates’ title ambitions.

With Sundowns also dropping points against Richards Bay, the Betway Premiership title race is set for a dramatic finish.

Chiefs, meanwhile, have unexpectedly stepped into the role of kingmakers. Having already denied Pirates maximum points, they now have the chance to influence the title race further when they take on Masandawana.

Chiefs and Sundowns clash in Loftus Versfeld

Pirates supporters will undoubtedly be backing their Soweto rivals when Chiefs travel to Loftus Versfelf, hoping for a rare favour. Even a draw could prove crucial in the context of the title race.

Amakhosi‘s preparations however, could be complicated by potential suspensions. Lebohang Maboe, Flavio Silva, Mfundo Vilakazi, Siphesihle Ndlovu and Nkosingiphile Ngcobo are all walking a disciplinary tightrope and could be unavailable for the Sundowns encounter.

Chiefs will need Maboe and Ndlovu against Sundowns

Key figures like Maboe, Ndlovu and Silva have been influential this season, and the technical team may opt to manage their minutes carefully in the midweek clash to avoid suspensions.

This could open the door for players such as Khanyisa Mayo and Thabo Cele to be handed rare starting opportunities, particularly in attack.

With pressure mounting, the upcoming fixture against Sundowns could prove decisive not only in the title race but also in shaping the future of Chiefs’ co-coaches, whose positions may hinge on the outcome of this high-stakes encounter.

Will Amakhosi decide league winners?
