Babes Wodumo And Naledi Aphiwe Face Legal Action Over ‘No-Show’ At Durban Gig
Durban female musicians Bongekile Simelane, popularly known as Babes Wodumo, and Naledi Aphiwe Myongwane are facing the long arm of the law.
This follows allegations that they failed to perform at the Action Bar in Shakaskraal, KwaDukuza in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN), on two separate occasions despite being paid in advance.
According to legal documents served to the duo, they were initially booked for an event on 2 May this year but failed to show up.
The venue owner then reached an agreement with them to perform at a subsequent event instead.
For the second event on 27 June, both artists even recorded and posted videos on their social media pages promising fans they would attend.
A source revealed that the venue owner decided to take legal action after the artists stopped answering phone calls and refused to refund the money.
Earlier this month, the venue’s management posted a statement on Facebook apologizing to fans for the artists’ absence.
They promised to take legal action due to the unreturned funds, expenses incurred, and damage to the venue’s reputation. To compensate patrons, management offered free entry to an event featuring Dankie Boi, Tipcee, and DJ Banana.
“They are facing arrest now because they refuse to return the money. Both of them are not answering their phones or replying to emails sent regarding this matter. They have received the legal papers I am showing you, but they have not responded. The owner is complaining about losing a lot of money,” the source explained.
According to the documents, the artists are required to pay back their booking fees plus the expenses incurred while planning for their appearance.
The documents reveal that Naledi had charged R30,000 for the gig, while Babes Wodumo was booked for R16,000.
Numerous attempts to contact both artists, but emails sent to them on Monday remained unanswered by yesterday.
Event coordinator and venue owner, Johnson Govender confirmed that while the matter is now with his lawyers, all he wants is his money back from the musicians.
