The DA in the eNdumeni local municipality in Dundee, KZN, has filed a vote of no confidence against the IFP mayor, who they say naps and snores during council meetings.
The DA claims Siyabonga Ndlovu also neglects his duties, which has become a problem for the municipality.
Saleem Abdool, the DA caucus leader in the council, alleges that Ndlovu is seen sleeping and heard snoring loudly in every meeting.
“We have raised concerns about this behaviour and also asked him if there’s anything wrong with him, but he always claims he is fine,” Abdool said.
“At worst, he would sleep and snore for a full three minutes while chairing a meeting. His finance committee cannot even remember the last time it convened a meeting.
“He sometimes takes naps during virtual meetings,” Abdool claimed.
He said that although Ndlovu works part-time as mayor, his ballooning petrol bill is concerning. Costs reach between R22,000 and R30,000 a month, despite the distance from his home to the municipality being only about 10 kilometres.
The DA also complains about Ndlovu’s official hired vehicle, which Abdool claims costs taxpayers around R400,000 a month.
The party further accuses him of interfering with the disciplinary processes of municipal workers.
Abdool alleges that Ndlovu has reinstated several staff members who have been suspended.
Scrolla.Africa has learned that some IFP councillors have had enough of Ndlovu, too, and want him removed.
The ANC has filed a motion of no confidence against council speaker Andile Ntibande, accusing him of avoiding convening meetings.
Ntibande confirmed the motion against Ndlovu, saying it was brought to his attention two weeks ago and is supposed to be discussed this week.
He also confirmed the motion against him by the ANC and rejected their accusations.
Ndlovu could not be reached for comment by the time of publication.
