Actress Asavela Mqokiyana’s divorce from her ex-husband, Vuyisa Mqokiyana, sparked a lot of speculation on social media platforms, with many sharing different scenarios that could have led to the divorce.
Asavela and her husband separated six months after their baby girl, who is now two years old, was born.
Their separation led to many insinuating that Asavela was first a side chick to Vuyisa in his first marriage, and some netizens added that she attended their wedding in 2014. This came after Asavela shared on X (formerly Twitter) that whether you know or it or not, a man will always have a side chick.
Most recently, the Uzalo actress shared her side of the story with actress and podcaster, Mapaseka Koetle on her podcast Mommy Diaries by Pasi. While on the podcast, Asavela expressed that she has always wanted to get married, because she enjoys building a family, cooking and being in natural surroundings.
Responding to the claims that she took her ex-husband from his wife, she clarified that when they were getting married, she was in matric. She added that although she is also aware that they invited the entire Isibaya cast, it was before her career as an actress started. Rather, she only met Vuyisa after she was on our screens.
“It (divorce) was not as painful at all, because I had dealt with it for months on my own with my family and my friends. So when it broke, I was already prepared because I knew what was coming,” she shared.
Asavela revealed how hard it was for her to go through a divorce with a six-month-old baby, because that was not a plan. She also shared that navigating parenthood alone has not been easy, and that she wanted her child to grow up in a two-parent household because she didn’t have that. However, she also expressed that her daughter healed her.
“What made it a lot easier is that we are fine with her father, and he is co-parenting. He has always been a great father to his kids. So I never doubted that he can be that for her,” she said.
When asked what she learnt from her marriage she said: “I learnt patience and to not lead, which is the hardest thing when you have been leading your whole life, and now you need to be submissive; you need to wait for the head – and thats a stumbling block,” shared former Isibaya actress.
