The recent attack on Carolina hospital staff in Mpumalanga has led to the arrest of four suspects by the Anti-Gang Unit of the police in the province.
The incident, which took place in the early hours of Saturday, 17 June 2023, involved a group of suspects storming the hospital premises, assaulting and robbing the staff, and causing extensive damage to hospital property.
The unruly behavior displayed by the suspects in response to the news of a man’s death due to gunshot wounds was strongly condemned by both authorities and the public.
In response, Lieutenant General Semakaleng Daphney Manamela, the Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, assembled a team of experts to investigate the incident and ensure that those responsible would be held accountable.
The diligent efforts of the investigation team led to the arrest of the four suspects, aged between 17 and 21. During the arrests, a mobile phone believed to have been stolen during the robbery was recovered.
The suspects are now scheduled to appear at the Carolina Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 03 July 2023, where they will face charges that include malicious damage to property, business robbery, and possession of suspected stolen property.
The Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Semakaleng Daphney Manamela, issued a stern warning against targeting health workers who are carrying out their duties.
She emphasized the commitment of the police to ensure the safety of health facilities and their staff, promising that all individuals involved in such attacks would be brought to justice.
The General’s determination to protect healthcare workers reflects the collective effort to put an end to lawlessness and ensure a safe working environment for essential service providers.
