SuperSport United interim coach Andre Arendse said it was ‘a bitter blow’ to not hold on for a win after conceding a contentious penalty in the final minutes of their 2-2 draw against Swallows on Friday night.
Arendse was disappointed not to get the win, in what he said was one of the toughest games they’ve played recently.
“Ja, a bitter blow,” Arendse said after the game.
“But I’ve got to say, it was a game that was probably our toughest game in the last four or five games that we’ve had to play.
“We were stretched by this team, they’ve got some quality on the ball, Swallows have, but I wanted to make the game about us tonight, and I thought we should have done that a little bit more in possession.
“Because we always looked threatening in possession when we were looking for forward solutions, the runs from Jones and Gabuza, those are the runs that set us up. And of course, when you’ve got midfielders and wingers joining in, you’re going to cause problems for the opposition.
“But I thought overall, if I take the scoreline away, we looked solid enough, defensively, we worked our socks off again, we let them in on one or two occasions, and of course, we were undone by the penalty.
“So disappointing from that perspective, but it’s very difficult for me to ask any more than what the players gave tonight. And that’s very pleasing, and that’s something to be proud of. And we’ll take it from here.”
