It turns out the mastermind of apartheid, Hendrik Verwoerd, might’ve been a secret fan of Xhosa magic to protect himself from gunshots.
As South Africa marks 58 years since Verwoerd’s stabbing in Parliament, an allegation has resurfaced during a discussion on radio. Apparently, old Hendrik was a regular user of Xhosa traditional healing.
Verwoerd was apparently close with Khotso Sethuntsa, a famous healer from Lusikisiki.
Sethuntsa, known for his 23 wives allegedly gave Verwoerd some good bulletproof muthi called ibangalala.
But Verwoerd was stabbed to death by Dimitri Tsafendas in the National Assembly on 6 September 1966.
Tsafendas, being the savvy assassin he was, found out about the muthi and decided to try a different way to kill Verwoerd, his girlfriend once revealed.
Journalist Fred Khumalo spilt the beans back in 2016, using the book: “The Extraordinary Khotso: Millionaire Medicine Man from Lusikisiki”.
The cherry on top? Sethuntsa’s fame skyrocketed after Verwoerd survived a shooting in 1960. Two bullets, no problem! Sethuntsa’s muthi was apparently the ultimate bulletproof vest.
