Another taxi operator from Alexandra was killed on Wednesday night, making it the third assassination in just five days as associations deny that there is a taxi war raging in the township.
The victim, a 45-year-old man from Alexandra, Randburg who is affiliated with Sandton Taxi Association (Armsta), was shot while buying food on Fourth Avenue and Roosevelt Street.
“He was apparently shot by two unknown men while buying food a kota at a kota shop,” said a person at the scene.
“The deceased was driving an Armsta Taxi association patrol vehicle.”
The attackers reportedly took the victim’s gun. Two bullet casings were found at the scene.
On Friday, an Alexandra Taxi Association (ATA) operator was killed at Pan Africa Mall while on Monday another taxi owner was killed in Alexandra’s Tsutsumani section.
Armsta spokesperson Tladi Lephonisa told Scrolla.Africa: “We don’t know why there are these killings. All these shootings and killings are related, but there is no war between taxi operators.”
Several taxi operators have been targeted on Armsta and ATA routes recently.
