Another Sundowns star goes under the knife, will miss AFCON

Mamelodi Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso has confirmed some more bad injury news.

The Brazilians currently have a string of players on the sidelines.

Now, a key defender has been ruled out for a lengthy period due to injury.

Sundowns star undergoes operation

Mamelodi Sundowns defender Mothobi Mvala has undergone an operation on his knee injury.

Mvala has been struggling with his knee since last season. Originally, he underwent a ‘natural’ treatment to sort his knee out.

And that was working well until a month ago when he suffered a major set-back during a match against Golden Arrows.

The Mamelodi Sundowns star was then forced to undergo knee surgery and coach Miguel Cardoso has now provided a fresh update on Mvala.

“Unfortunately, we have more severe questions with Mothobi Mvala, who went for surgery last week,” Cardoso told FARPost.

“Even in the locker room after the match. We spoke a lot about that and said we should take Mothobi’s spirit on the pitch. We wanted to honour him with a good match. So, it’s the most challenging situation we have in terms of a long-term recovery for him.”

No Afcon for Mvala

Mothobi Mvala will unfortunately miss out on the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations tournament.

The Mamelodi Sundowns star was a key player for Hugo Broos throughout his tenure with Bafana Bafana.

Due to his knee injury, he unfortunately won’t be in-line for selection for AFCON 2025.

At AFCON 2023, Mvala featured in every match at the tournament except for the Third/Fourth place playoff.
