Another Lorch? Fans split over Saleng’s switch from Pirates to Sundowns

Fans have responded after Orlando Pirates superstar Monnapule Saleng transferred to Mamelodi Sundowns on Friday.

The speedy winger was on loan to Orbit College this season, and there were reports that he might be recalled by Abdeslam Ouaddou in the second half of the season.

His move to Sundowns comes as a surprise since there were no prior links connecting him to the Tshwane giants. Saleng is the second player from Pirates to join Sundowns in two years; in 2024, Thembinkosi Lorch made a shocking move to the Brazilians that did not sit well with Pirates fans.

Additionally, Nyoso struggled to find playing time and was eventually loaned to Wydad Casablanca, where he impressed and was subsequently purchased by the Moroccan giants.

Saleng joins Sundowns from Pirates

Many fans on X felt the signing of Saleng was similar to that of Lorch given that both players had fallen out with Pirates before they signed for Downs.

@LittleHussle wrote: “From Lorch is average to signing him. From Saleng is a road runner and a one-season wonder to signing him. It’s quite clear Marabastad clan loves Pirates rejects.”

@Future_billy wrote: “This is worse than heartbreak. No loyalty in the streets. I still had hope I would see Monapule Saleng in Pirates colours, but I was okay if he never wore them… but switching to Mamelodi Sundowns like Thembinkosi Lorch, is killing me.”

@LedwabaRonald wrote: “When Orlando Pirates is tired of a star player, they offload them to Sundowns. Farewell to Saleng. All the best.

@SiyaNdlovu wrote: “Saleng’s departure is a blessing just like the Lorch one. We are loyal to the badge than a player.”

Saleng could make his debut for Sundowns later this month when the Brazilians play in the Betway Premiership and CAF Champions League.

Did Saleng make a good move?
