An ANC Mayor drove away from a petrol station without paying for fuel and the matter has now been referred to a Public Accounts Committee.

A vehicle carrying Maryna Basson, Mayor of ZF Mgcawu District Municipality in the Northern Cape, was seen pulling out of the petrol station on CCTV. The cameras captured the license plate, make of car, and other incriminating details.

ZF Mgcawu administration officials have since returned to pay for the fuel, completing a 320-mile round trip. But only after they were presented with the evidence and given a deadline to comply. This journey’s squandered funds are also being investigated.

The ANC Mayor, ironically, was on her way to meet Cyril Ramaphosa at a regional event in Kimberley. However, even an appointment with the president does not exempt you from the law, as Flip Van Der Steen emphasizes.

According to his instructions, the DA Whip in Dawid Kruiper Municipality has confirmed that an investigation is already underway. Van Der Steen has accused Maryna Basson of ‘criminal behavior,’ and he is now determined to hold her accountable.

“An attempt by the Mayor of ZF Mgcawu district municipality to dodge payment for a tank of fuel for the mayoral vehicle, has been referred by the DA to the Municipal Public Accounts Committee (MPAC) for investigation.”

“After hightailing it from a filling station in Olifantshoek over the weekend without paying, details of the vehicle, including its make and numberplate, were captured on camera and posted on Facebook in an attempt to find the driver.”

“It soon came to light that the publicised details were those of the ZF Mgcawu mayoral vehicle, which was on a round trip from Upington to Kimberley, where Mayor Maryna Basson was to attend a campaign launch with President Cyril Ramapohsa,” Flip Van Der Steen.

Meanwhile the mayor’s office also confirmed that the incident did actually happen saying: On the 2nd of October 2022, the official vehicle of the Executive Mayor stopped at the Engen Garage in Olifantshoek for fuel. In a misunderstanding between the driver of the vehicle and the gas station attendant the account was not settled, as the driver was under the impression that the incumbent in the car paid and the attendant was under the impression the driver paid inside,” the office said.

Going on further they stated that they had paid for the amount in full. “The ZF Mgcawu District Municipality can confirm that the Executive Mayor, Cllr Maryna Basson personally apologized to the owner of the garage on behalf of the driver. We can also confirm that:

“The Executive Mayor did not drive the vehicle and was not aware of the non-payment of the fuel at the time of the incident.”
