ANC political activist Sizwe Nyambi was shot multiple times outside his home in Schoemansdal, Mpumalanga, on Tuesday night.
Police are now searching for the gunman.
Nyambi, a former SRC president at Tshwane University of Technology, was attacked around 9.20pm as he arrived home with a friend.
Colonel Donald Mdhluli, Mpumalanga police spokesperson, said a man in a black jersey and white hat approached Nyambi as he opened his gate and fired several shots, seriously wounding him.
“The suspect continued firing at the victim as he tried to flee towards safety,” Mdhluli said.
Nyambi was rushed to a nearby hospital in critical condition.
Known for posting political commentary on social media, Nyambi had just gone live on Facebook to criticise Nkomazi municipality employees for water supply issues in local villages before the shooting.
Major-General Zeph Mkhwanazi, acting provincial police commissioner, condemned the attack and promised swift action to apprehend the suspect.
